For artist Johan Creten, we designed and produced the book Octo – Jenny Haniver, a publication dedicated to his latest permanent sculpture in the public space of Sète, France.
On 11 June 2025,Octo – Jenny Haniver was unveiled in the Sémaphore Gardens, near the Paul Valéry Museum and the town’s renowned marine cemetery. This bronze sculpture — powerful, poetic, and enigmatic — evokes the mystery of the sea: its unfathomable depths, invisible dangers, and mesmerising creatures.
With this work, Johan Creten invites contemplation of the unknown, the living, and the collective memory bound to the sea. Octo – Jenny Haniver is part of the City of Sète’s commitment to fostering a dialogue between contemporary art and the Mediterranean landscape, enriching its outdoor cultural heritage in a lasting way.
Johan Creten, een Belgische kunstenaar opgeleid aan de École des Beaux-Arts in Parijs, is een belangrijke figuur in de hedendaagse beeldhouwkunst. Als voorloper van de heropleving van keramiek, transformeert hij materialen – klei, brons – om krachtige, symbolische en soms verontrustende vormen te creëren.
Octo, zijn sculptuur in Sète, is het resultaat van meer dan tien jaar werk en artistieke rijping. Aanvankelijk gepresenteerd in het Grand Palais in 2012 en later in 2017 in het CRAC in Sète, heeft het werk verschillende evoluties doorgemaakt voordat het zijn definitieve vorm vond, specifiek bedacht voor de Jardin du Sémaphore in Sète (Frankrijk).
