Hearts for Gaza is a community initiative of cycling enthusiasts with a shared mission: to use sport to promote international solidarity with Gaza and raise funds for the Gaza Sunbirds to support their humanitarian efforts.
Driven by outrage over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the initiative for a cycling solidarity action was born. Together with a few like-minded individuals, we developed the concept and turned it into a powerful platform for action and connection. What began as a local gesture of solidarity grew into a movement that mobilises people – both literally and figuratively – to raise their voices.
We took responsibility for the design, communication, and web development. The platform enables individuals and sports organisations to create and organise their own cycling, running, and walking routes, contributing to global support for the victims of the Gaza crisis.
The Gaza Sunbirds are a para-cycling team dedicated to supporting their community amidst the ongoing crisis in Gaza. They have distributed vital aid, including food, baby supplies, survival packs, and blankets, while continuing their mission to address urgent humanitarian needs.
In addition to their relief efforts, the team is focused on international para-cycling competitions, with co-founder and captain Alaa aiming to compete in upcoming world cups and championships.
After their evacuation from Gaza, Alaa al-Dali and Mohamed Asfour achieved Palestine’s first-ever top 20 finish at the Para-Cycling World Cup in Belgium on May 2 and 4 of this year. Despite immense challenges in Gaza — including life-changing injuries, displacement, and years of living under siege — Alaa and Mohamed have qualified for the upcoming World Championships in August 2025. They are realizing the dream on which their team, the Gaza Sunbirds, was founded: to represent Palestine on the global stage.
