Antwerp expands its rail network
With the expansion of the Hupac Shuttle Net, a new multimodal terminal, a new rail link between Antwerp Main Hub and the port of Rotterdam and a new connection between Antwerp and Bavaria, the port of Antwerp has significantly expanded its railway network.

All Weather Terminal in Antwerp
Antwerp Stevedoring International (ASI), a subsidiary of Wijngaard Natie, celebrated the opening of its first All Weather Terminal on 22 June. The new facility was officially inaugurated by port alderman Marc Van Peel with first consignment of steel products being loaded for the Swedish customer SSAB.

Coconut biobeds for pure water
Antwerp Port Authority has been investing in small-scale water purification systems for some time now. In addition to the traditional reed beds, three artificial beds made of coconut bast have been created to serve office buildings.

More than 100,000 berth requests in BTS
Antwerp Port Authority has passed the 100,000 mark for berth requests received by its Barge Traffic System (BTS). This application enables incoming barges to report in advance to the terminal operators, so reducing terminal waiting times to a minimum.

Cruise tourism gets a boost
Cruise tourism is doing very well in Antwerp, with more and more sea and river cruise companies finding their way to Antwerp Cruise Port. There are already 19 sea cruises and 455 river cruises scheduled for 2010.

Port House Info Point
Antwerp Port Authority has opened an Info Point dedicated to its new headquarters. Here visitors can see the designs and models for the new Port House submitted by the five architectural firms on the shortlist. Pride of place naturally goes to the winning entry by the London firm of Zaha Hadid Architects.

Foreign visits
On 10 June a delegation from Shangdong province in eastern China visited the port of Antwerp.
In connection with the Breakbulk Conference a large Canadian delegation was received in the Port House for a presentation and an extensive Meet & Greet.

Antwerp Port Authority: facts and figures
Antwerp Port Authority is an independent, municipally-owned company of the City of Antwerp, which manages the port infrastructure. It employs some 1,650 people.
The Port Authority aims to sustainably increase the added value generated by the port and to strengthen the port's competitive position. This is done through four approaches that complement one another, namely by being competitive and multifunctional (a vital port), operational, efficient and reliable (an efficient port), caring for the environment, welfare and financial health (a sustainable port), as a partner for employees, customers and society (a stakeholder port).

Maritime freight volume in 2008: 190 million tonnes (54% container, 21% liquid bulk, 14% dry bulk, 11% other conventional/breakbulk).

Port area:113,057 ha, with 530 ha of covered storage, 156 km of quay, 1113 km of rail track, 400 km of road and 6 locks.
Largest petrochemical cluster in Europe, largest steel and fruit port, largest volume of forest products, world import port for coffee, certified on the London and New York futures markets.
