Het Dwaallicht is Willem ELSSCHOTS'S last and most enigmatic work. Willem ELSSCHOTS'S alter ego Laarmans is being dragged through the Antwerp metropolis by three Afghan sailors. Together with them he wanders through the city in search of the mysterious Maria VAN DAM, a seamstress the sailors have met that morning on the ship. It is a compelling story full of surprises, interruptions and inhibitions.
At the request of Antwerp Book Capital the Philharmonic and Behoud de Begeerte translated this enigmatic work to music and images with a literary concert in the Singel. Most important was the tension between appearance and being, between ideal and reality, between dream and action. With SCHUBERT, BERGH and BERNSTEIN and a sophisticated text projection, you could relive LAARMANS’ attempt to escape the dull civilian life.
Schubert's Wandererfantasie is an appropriate choice. Not only SCHUBERT was one of Elsschot favorite composers. The basic motif of the piano sonata follows closely Het Dwaallicht: the so called Wanderlust, the atmosphere of loneliness and longing and the quest for unattainable happiness fits LAARMANS very well.
In Fancy Fee of Leonard BERNSTEIN the plot revolves around three sailors who are docked in the port of New York. They have a day off and take the opportunity to explore Manhattan. Antwerp is not New York, and the three sailors in Fancy Fee are Americans, not Afghans. Yet they are driven by the same desire: they go looking for the woman of their dreams.
The women theme is found in the Lulu-Suite from the last and unfinished opera by Alban BERGH. Lulu is a seductive and elusive woman. A woman of the world and a force of nature, a fickle girl who seduces men and causes catastrophes. Also Maria VAN DAM seduces and is untraceable. She is a romantic ideal. She is present and absent. At the same time she, and nobody else, starts the story of Het Dwaallicht.
