This poster was created for the prestigious exhibition Reunion, from Quinten METSIJS to Peter Paul RUBENS as a centerpiece of the celebration of 450 years Antwerp Cathedral. In 1559 the diocese of Antwerp was founded and the Our Lady church acquired the status of cathedral.
The many works of art that the cathedral owned were removed by the French occupying forces after the French Revolution. Some came back after the fall of Napoleon, but a large part of the original collection is still divided over several museums like the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen (KMSKA) and other places.
Altar Pieces
Eight altar pieces temporarily moved from the KMSKA back to the original spot for the exhibition. The oldest altarpiece that returned, is the famous ‘Lamentation of Christ’ (1509-1511) of Quinten METSIJS. Also ‘The last judgement’ of Barend VAN ORLEY (1510) and ‘The fall of the rebel angels’ by Frans FLORIS date from before the iconoclasm of 1566, when Catholic church interiors were demolished. Also a painting of Rubens moved from the KMSKA: Christ on the Straw.
Design
The poster campaign had 3 versions. Along with the curator Dr. Ria FABRI we chose 3 works:
1. The fall of the rebel angels, Frans FLORIS, 1554;
2. The last judgement with the seven works of mercy, Bernard VAN ORLEY, ca 1517-1524/25;
3. Christ among the scribes, Frans II FRANCKEN, 1587
We used some details out of this paintings on which we placed a transparent black area. These black areas were the outline of the form of the relevant paintings as visual link to the altar pieces. The typography was referring to the ‘golden’ 16th century and was therefore logically put in gold.
