Ever since its first publication, the art magazine ART has relied on photographer Jean-Pierre STOOP for its cover images. This has resulted in the extraordinary series of artists’ portraits of which this book presents a selection. STOOP does not approach his subjects with ready-made techniques or tricks. Nor does he decide in advance how his subjects should appear… And yet, all the photos very subtly carry Jean-Pierre Stoop’s mark: it’s clear that only he could have made them, even if one cannot immediately put one’s finger on it. The pictures are the result of an encounter between the photographer and his subject, not of a technical toolbox or a series of mannerism that are supposed to be a ‘style’. As a photographer, Jean-Pierre has the self-confidence and the ability to meet his subjects halfway. As a result his photographs merge with their subjects — artists such as Luc TUYMANS, Raoul DE KEYZER, Anne-Mie VAN KERCKHOVEN, Narcisse TORDOIR and many others.
